The Law of Universal Gravitation was proposed by Isaac Newton in 1687. It states that every object in the universe attracts every other object with a force that depends on their masses and the distance between them.
The greater the mass of the objects, the stronger the gravitational attraction. However, this force decreases with the square of the distance between them, meaning it quickly weakens as objects move farther apart.
This was revolutionary because it showed that the same force that causes an apple to fall on Earth also governs the motion of the Moon and planets in space.
