
Entropy is a measure of how energy and matter can be arranged within a system. In general, systems naturally evolve toward states that can exist in a greater number of possible arrangements.
Because there are usually far more disordered arrangements than ordered ones, entropy tends to increase over time. This tendency explains why many natural processes are irreversible, such as a glass shattering or heat flowing from a hot object to a colder one.
Entropy plays a fundamental role in thermodynamics, cosmology, and information theory. It is also closely connected to the arrow of time, helping explain why time appears to move in only one direction.
