The Idea

Gravitational waves are distortions in space-time created by accelerating massive objects.

When objects like black holes or neutron stars orbit and collide, they can disturb space-time so intensely that waves spread outward across the universe.

The Explanation

As a gravitational wave passes, it alternately stretches and compresses space in different directions.

The effect is incredibly small by the time these waves reach Earth, but it means that the distances between objects can physically change as the wave passes through.

Why It Matters

Gravitational waves travel across the universe at the speed of light, carrying information about the extreme events that created them.

By detecting these waves, we can study phenomena such as merging black holes and neutron stars in a way that does not depend on observing light.
