What holds atoms together?

The Idea

Everything you see — from water and air to rocks and living organisms — is made of atoms. But atoms rarely exist alone. Instead, they connect with one another to form more complex structures.

These connections are called chemical bonds, and they are the foundation of all matter.

The Explanation

Chemical bonds form because of interactions between electrons, the negatively charged particles surrounding an atom's nucleus. In some cases, atoms share electrons (covalent bonds), while in others, electrons are transferred (ionic bonds), and weaker attractions like hydrogen bonds also play important roles.

These different types of bonding determine how substances behave — whether they are solid or liquid, strong or fragile, reactive or stable.

Why It Matters

Chemical bonds explain why water has unique properties, why salt forms crystals, and how complex molecules like proteins and DNA can exist.

Without chemical bonds, atoms would remain isolated, and the rich diversity of materials — including life itself — would not be possible.
