Amethyst

Amethysts are a purple variety of quartz, a common and durable mineral made of silicon dioxide.

Their color comes from small amounts of iron trapped in the crystal structure, which are altered by natural radiation over long periods of time, producing shades that range from pale lavender to deep violet.

Amethysts often form inside geodes—hollow cavities in volcanic rock where crystals grow inward from the walls.
